정 isn't love or friendship — it's deeper and stranger. You can have 정 for someone you argue with daily. 정 = the emotional sediment that builds up from shared time. It makes Koreans stay in jobs, relationships, and neighborhoods longer than logic dictates.

The saddest Korean phrase: 정 떨어졌다 (my 정 has fallen away). It means the attachment that held the relationship together has finally dissolved. It's worse than 'I don't love you anymore' — it means 'I have no feelings left at all.' When 정 goes, there's nothing left to save.
