Why Koreans say it this way
썸 (some) is the uniquely Korean pre-dating stage — you like each other but haven't confessed. 썸 타다 = riding the some. It can last weeks or months. 썸남 = some-guy, 썸녀 = some-girl. Asking 우리 뭐야? (what are we?) ends the 썸 stage.
